Getting everything you need from home

Completely detaching yourself from your entire life when you go to university can be traumatic, even for the toughest of the bunch. Make sure you take everything that you need at home, not just for practical reasons but also for comfort.

Do you have a favorite plushy? Don’t be ashamed of stuffing it into your college bag, and the same goes for that family photo you’d love to pin on your wall.

So if you really want to keep someone close, nothing is really stopping you.  Sure, it’s not the same thing as being physically close to them all the time, but that doesn’t mean you should take for granted the means of connection you do have.

No matter what you feel, keeping things bottled up inside you is never the answer. Most universities have a wide range of support programs, from student-run support lines to help centers where you can talk or work through your problems with a guidance counselor.

Talking about your problems is critical and it helps tremendously. Just by speaking the words out can help you feel like you’ve lifted a boulder off your shoulders.

Regardless of how much some people would like to play the lone wolf character, it’s a proven fact that all humans need to connect with someone and to feel understood.

Even the simplest of conversations can feel extremely comforting, let alone deeper ones where you talk about the precise things that keep pressing on the back of your mind.

Expand your horizon

Another reason for which you might get the college blues is that; home is all you know. Try to get out there and see what else the world has to offer. You might be surprised at how much you can enjoy yourself and what kind of people you can find and connect with.

It’s not swapping new for old, it’s just adding to your personal library of contacts and experiences.  Once you’ve found your place in this new, scary environment, things start to look less gloom and all of the sudden you can see a better college experience developing in front of you.

There are a lot of factors that may contribute to the overall outcome of what you make of college, but for the most part, it’s an experience and a phase of your life that you can shape according to your own mold. So if there’s something you don’t quite enjoy how college is presented to you, just change it.
