How Can Your Shoes effect Your Health?
Health is a large concern for people nowadays, with the increase of many new and advanced infections and diseases taking the main spotlights. This may sound very strange, but your shoes play a role in those issues. They act as a very good transmitter of germs and fungal infections, and can be potentially harmful for your overall health. How? We are here to answer, and today, we are going to talk just about that!
There are more than a handful of factors in wearing shoes that can affect your health in a number of different ways. Below are some of them. Note that all the following are because of different types of shoes. So once we are done discussing this, we’ll look at the do’s and don’ts too.
1. They are a Source of Fungal Infections
The main and most common cause of fungal infections is wearing tight shoes that cramp and don’t allow your feet to breathe. Tight shoes result in the production of a large amount of sweat in the socks or feet, as more than 250,000 sweat glands are present in each foot. That particular sweat is a potential attraction for fungal infections, so if you are really sweaty, stay away from dirty places!
2. Knee Pain is Inevitable:
Some shoes are designed with concerns to the overall health of the foot and body, while others aren’t. Some shoes like heels and sneakers affect the positioning of the feet, which swings open the wide gates of knee pain. What is that? As the name suggests, it is the pain that is experienced in the hinge joint of the thigh bone. It is painful and can restrict movement, so watch out for uncomfy shoes!
3. They Can Cause Calluses and Corns
This may sound unbelievable, but it is the bitter truth. When you wear shoes, your feet are tightly pressed against the sole of the shoe, and you know what that means. When pressure is applied, like walking on a rough surface, the sole generates friction, and that friction affects the feet and causes calluses and corns.
4. Wearing Them Can Also Result in Bunions
Most people can agree as studies suggest that over 45% have had their feet swollen because of wearing shoes. Tight shoes cramp your feet, and if worn for a long time, can swell the cramped area! It is painful and most cases of swelling are caused by tight shoes. What’s worse? Bunions! Tight shoes can also cause bunions as your large toe can get fractured if the shoes are bending it.
5. Watch out for Metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia, or stone bruise, is another thing that can happen due to wearing tight shoes. What is Metatarsalgia? It is a painful condition that affects the metatarsal region of the feet. It affects both the joints and the bones of that particular region. It is caused by tight shoes, amongst many other factors.
What Should be Done?
I think that enough scaring for today, because if I tell you more, you’ll surely start going out with your bare feet, and to tell you the truth, there are many problems that can arise because of that as well! So don’t get me started on that! Well back to the topic, all of the things stated above can be avoided altogether by following the tips and preventions below. They are very easy to do and don’t require a lot of money or effort. So, let’s get to it then!
• Whenever you go to the market to buy new shoes, be sure to get ones that are spacious and bigger than the size of your feet. How can you do that? Measure your foot size by putting your foot on a paper and plotting a silhouette of it with a pen or pencil. Compare the shoe you are going to buy with the drawing, and if it is smaller or the exact size, ask for a bigger one.
• Since most people want the easy way out and ask doctors the perfect type of shoe for their feet, here’s the answer. There isn’t! Everyone’s feet differs from one another, so the shoes required are also different. However, if you ask for a guideline, sandals and shoes that are open are the best choice as they allow your feet to breathe easily.
• Here’s a tip most podiatrists and shoe vendors don’t tell you. Get leather shoes if you want coolness. Why? Because leather allows air to freely circulate as it has small pores that allow the passage of air in and out of the feet.
• If you have an issue of sweaty feet, buy shoes that are manufactured from mesh fabrics. Before you ask what that does, I’ll explain. Mesh fabrics are made of special polymers such that they absorb liquid, or in this case, sweat. They also help achieve the maximum amount of breathability to can supply your feet, so go on and buy a pair!
• Like stated above, shoes with heels are your natural enemies. Don’t get them! However, you can get ones with very small heels if you want to balance foot health and fashion together, but it doesn’t work well if you ask us!
• Tight shoes are also not recommended, or if you ask me, should be banned! They not only contribute towards sweaty feet, but are also a harm to your toes and nails! Do yourself a favor and don’t get shoes that are extremely fit or tight, you’ll thank me later.
